Dry is a good thing for your humor, your martini, but not for this

Dry sex, it happens but it is not a good thing. It needs to be treated. When it comes to health, most of us agree we want the most effective treatment. But when it comes to date night, perhaps the speed of effectiveness is actually very important! Vaginal discomfort can be one of the most bothersome conditions for a woman. itching, burning, urinary frequency, they are all related, and can all be fixed without medication. Vaginal dryness can occur for many reasons, but come in to discuss, it really can be fixed, and surprisingly quickly!

1. Lubricants can help anyone slide in, but other than actually making you have more sex (it's own cure to an extent!) lubricants do not cure any vaginal problems.

2. Diagnosis is important, and you cannot make this diagnosis on your own. We encourage women with this symptoms to first get an exam. This can help you determine if there are any medical conditions that need prompt evaluation and therapy: infections including yeast , precancerous changes, skin conditions or moles, or even sexually transmitted infections, all of which can present as new onset vaginal dryness. You definitely don't want to treat an early yeast infection with just some extra lubrication tonight, that is not a quick cure, but in fact can slow the process down!

3. Even for a new mom or someone on progesterone only contraception, dry sex can happen. It's usually do to low estrogen Estrogen works to treat the vaginal changes that occur in all these conditions, not just menopause.

4. For some women there are only minor symptoms, others have bladder symptoms, recurrent urinary tract infections, stress incontinence, painful sex, irritating dryness or itching. Women who have these symptoms in menopause, and now is more accurately called genitourinary syndrome of menopause. It is commonly caused by the thinning of the vaginal walls due to menopausal changes.

5. For the most part your gyno can tell by taking to you and doing a quick exam to determine the cause of dry sex. Often testing can be done but won't necessarily have to be done.

6. The quickest therapies usually involve the non-medical therapy of MonaLisaTouch or ThermiVa, but other therapies can work as well. You may need to do your homework. Not all gynecologiests are equiped with the best technologies.

7. Sometimes it's necessary to try more than one strategy. Generally in the past gynos have recommended nonhormonal moisturizers if you have mild symptoms, and estrogen therapy as the treatment of choice for this condition, and now we have the new painful sex treatment ospemifene. Ospemifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that makes vaginal tissue thicker and less fragile, resulting in a reduction in the amount of pain women experience with sexual intercourse. Although gynos estimate that virtually all women remaining sexually active into their post menopausal years will have dry sex complaint if not treated by hormone therapy, over half never even bring it up at a medical visit. Of women with genitourinary syndrome in menopause so a great number of women stand to benefit by considering therapy.

8. Get all infections and bladder conditions treated first. Before therapy you need some evaluation: do you have an infection of the vagina, a bladder infection, or perhaps badder dysfunction that can be detected by special testing. . Vaginal estrogen treatments are effective for all of the issues that occur with this syndrome. The doses of estrogen given do not cause estrogen blood levels to differ from women without the vaginal estrogen treatment. Women need to be treated with vaginal estrogens for about 3 months for full effectiveness, and there is a warning that the medication can cause thickening of the lining of the uterus which would need to be evaluated. Women experiencing unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding need to see their gyno to see if they have this complication.
