Pearl Harbor was being attacked, and a young Hungarian chemist George Rosenkranz was in Havana waiting to travel to the University of Quito in Equador to become a professor of chemistry. But the ship didn't come, and he took a job in a local pharmacy, and through great entrepreneurial skills began to develop a business in manufacturing chemicals. He made vitamin A from shark liver oil, and began to eek out small amounts of testosterone and progesterone from sarsaparilla roots from Mexico when he became noticed by the company Syntex.
