You Tested Negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2 Genes, Exactly What Test Would Be Next?

Genetic testing should always be undertaken after careful consultation with your ordering physician. You need to ask yourself how you will use the information and how you will react to the information, and whether your family will benefit from the information, just for starters. The cost and any potential side effects of the test should be considered. It' is also important to remember that testing negative doesn't mean you will never get the disease you are screening for, as most diseases come from a variety of contributing factors. But gene testing in a disease like breast cancer has a lot of potential benefits for an individual women. Women with breast cancers are thought to have breast cancers because their body did not properly suppress damaged DNA, thus cells that should have died begin to replicate out of control. BRCA 1 and 2 carriers have defects in their p53 repair system, and now there is a gene called PALB2. The PALB2 gene interacts with BRCA2 to repair damaged DNA and help maintain the rate of cell growth and division. Some families with many cases of breast cancer in their families have now found that they may have this gene that is responsible for their condition. Like women with BRCA 1 and 2 genes, who find out they have PALB2 genes may need customized screening for breast cancers.
