Packing for Surgery? Don't Forget Your Favorite Gum!

In the July issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology a study from Austria was performed to look at how fast patients had return of bowel function after laparoscopic surgery. They discovered that the patients had a much quicker return to bowel function and less pain if they were given gum to chew for 15 minutes every 2 hours. There was no real difference in how fast the group actually had a bowel movement after surgery but patient satisfaction was greater, and there were no adverse effects of the gum chewing either. Gum chewing is a low tech and low cost way to improve your gyno surgery experience! I suggest trying it!
