Leonardo Da Vinci Gynecologic Contributions

Leonardo Da Vinci's Fetal Sketch with Mirror Writting
Leonardo da Vinci's studies of anatomy extended into pregnancy and shown here is one of his fetal anatomic renderings. The sketching includes some ruminations about the uterus itself, the position of the baby and the pelvis. I like the way the sketch even shows a small ovary perched upon the side of the uterus. The writing may seem a bit cryptic to the causal observer, he used mirror-writing. Youcan use an actual mirror to help create it, he was able to use his left hand and write essentially backwards quickly. Whether it was to not smudge ink, or whether it was to be secretive, we all have our theories.
