Gabbing is the Newest Gyno Test, Not A Pap!

Just off the Medscape site: "For the first time, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) has issued expert recommendations for gynecologic cancer surveillance. The document was published in the June issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology." There has never before been standardized ways to follow patients who have completed gynecologic cancer treatments and have returned to their gynecologists for ongoing care. And for most typical gynecologic cancers the pap test didn't make the cut as a necessary way to check for cancer recurrence. In most cancers getting follow up CA125 levels won't help either. It's too soon to say how new ovarian cancer markers will factor into these guidelines as new data is coming out on tests like Ova1 all the time In some studies, just talking to the patient about any symptoms she has is the way to detect recurrence, but a pap test alone found virtually none of the cases! The guidelines do urge each patient to come up with a plan with her individual gyno. So the follow up care may slightly differ from woman to woman. We will be follow this story closely!
