Fibroid Uterus After Pregnancy

Women who have the muscle tumors of the uterus called uterine leiomyomata, and nicknamed fibroids often get pregnant and go to term. It's been thought that when women have more babies they are less likely to have problems with fibroids over time. It's not really been known if in fact that some women with fibroids actually never conceive and that this fact actually has confused our thinking about pregnancy's affect on the fibroids themselves. The fibroid lumps do grow in early pregnancy, and eventually they shrink, and about 3-6 months after a pregnancy they are about half the size that they were. A small group of women who were recently pregnant were studied in a NIH study published in the June 2011 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A new finding was that users of the progesterone only pills seemed to have their fibroids shrink less even if they were breastfeeding. The fibroids that are in the lining of the uterus seem to shrink the most, and black women had a bit less fibroid shrinkage than other groups of women. In general, although the authors looked at lots of factors, most did not affect whether the fibroids changed after pregnancy or not.

  2. For woemn who are found to have a uterine fibroid after or at the time of a miscarriage, there are several things to discuss with your gynecologist. About 1-2% of pregnant women are diagnosed with uterine fibroids during their pregnancy. Since progesterone promotes the growth of fibroids, there is often growth of the fibroids, this is why we say some women will have problems with the fibroids enlarging during pregnancy. Since the fibroid can grow in any part of the uterus it is women with a fibroid that blocks the tubal opening who have the highest rate of infertility and yet women with fibroids located where the placenta wants to implant are also subjected to risk of infertility as well. Oddly not all studies link fibroids to miscarriages. So if a woman has a miscarriage, it is likely to be due to the other causes of miscarriage (like poor egg development), and not as likely to be caused by the fibroid itself. The size of the fibroid alone is not enough to predict problems in pregnancy, and small fibroids are as likely to grow as large ones. Most women with fibroids can have a successful pregnancy, so when you are next with your gynecologist you can discuss the chance you have of this happening again, and make a plan for whether you need treatment before the next pregnancy attempt. We wish you well in your quest.

  4. I had poly-cystic ovaries before marriage.but i conceived in first month of my married life.I had a swear pain in my lower abdomen in first trimester. My Dr tolled me that its a small fibroid in uterus.Any ways during my pregnancy it did not hurt me anymore, but now my baby girl is just 5 months. I am again facing the problem. I suffer terrible pain during intercourse.my menstrual period is increased from 3 days to 7 or 8 days, its irregular too, feeling pressure, lower back pain and sometimes nausea. I'm really afraid to go to the doctor.

  5. Excellent point regarding fibroid uterus in puberty, I do not remember ever hearing of a case until after the first period! For the reader who has asked about worsening pain of your fibroid after pregnancy it might be due to a process called red degeneration. This is when there is bleeding into the middle of a fibroid. Women can get pain, tenderness, vomiting, and even have fevers and elevated white blood cell counts. When this occurs treatment is really the best, and fibroid treatment may also improve your chances of another successful pregnancy. Since you are expressing fear over seeking medical care, it's important to let your health care provider know you have concerns so that you can tackle them together. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  7. Women with increased abdominal girth 8 weeks post pregnancy may indeed have a uterine fibroid that is large enough to cause abdominal swelling. However, women can have other reasons for a larger abdomen. After pregnancy you can have weakened abdominal muscles, increased abdominal fat, bloating to name a few of the reasons you do not yet have a flat abdomen. Do get an ultrasound to determine the present post-partum size of your fibroids. Anyone who asks a mother if a child was left in her belly is clearly being insulting, and I wish I could cure that illness! Hopefully we all only have kind people in our lives, but we know that is not the way. We welcome new patients at womenshealthpractice.com

  8. I'm now 2 weeks post c-section but my uterus hasn't shrunk below my umbilicus. Is this because of the fibroids? Should I be concerned?

  9. Full uterine in volition (shrink) is at 6 weeks out. The pros seas may be gradual. We check our c-section patient s at two weeks and help them know if the process is normal and how much enlargement may be due to other variables like fibroids or twins or processes that need attention.

  10. My Dr told me after given birth (vaginal) that I had a small fibroid but that it's nothing to worry about as it will shrink with time. Do I really have anything to worry about especially now that I am planning my next pregnancy?

  11. Uterine fibroids can cause problems in pregnancy, although most with fibroids will not have problems conceiving or carrying a pregnancy. Prior to pregnancy it is an excellent topic for your gynecologist at your pregnancy planning visit, which every one should have.

  12. I had a 10 cm fibroid that has shrunk a lot since I gave birth 10 weeks ago (I think I can just feel it at the bottom of my uterus, but luckily you can't ser it.)However, I am still bleeding quite heavily and wonder what I can do about it. I am breastfeeding and my uterus seems to have contracted. My doctor said I should take the pop cerelle but it looks like I shouldn't based on your comments. I am also not keen on passing on hormones to my baby. I also sometimes get a burning feeling and wonder if the fibroid is pressing on a nerve or something. I have got a scan booked but just wonder when this bleeding is going to stop. Thankyou

  13. Bleeding patterns after pregnancy vary greatly, so the presence or absence of a uterine fibroid doesn't always predict what precisely is occurring. Bleeding is most typically from the uterus itself, but bleeding can occur from the cervix or even tears in the vagina, or could be concealed internally, so it really needs to be checked by a physician to know what is really going on and then they will be able to predict how long you may have the bleeding.

  14. I'm almost five months post partum and my belly is still huge I have five fibroids as of late.I had seven during pregnancy and the two must have shrunk because they did not show up on a recent ultrasound. Is there any chance the rest will shrink? I had a C-section and it took me two months to heal because I kept getting infected due to all the skin hanging over my waist due to the weight. I am afraid to have anymore surgery right now because of pain and recovery time.

  15. I am 7 months post c-section and had my baby at 31 weeks due to high blood pressure and fibroids that were growing at a really fast pace. I did not however have the fibroids checked after birth because I had stayed in the hospital for a very long time so didn't want to go back :-( .
I now go on my periods twice a months with cramps. I am not taking any contraceptives.
Should I be worried about the change in my cycle? Which contraceptive can I take to control my periods?

  16. Fibroids that grow in pregnancy may in fact regress in size as the effects of the pregnancy hormones wear off. The size your fibroids are at the 6 week check up is a good indication of how they are going to be. Heavier periods may in fact be a sign of a uterine fibroid growth or a consequence of the uterine fibroid so it is important to see you physician in their office so they can determine what your options really are.

  17. I have a substantial uterine fibroid, before pregnancy was 81.2cm and 62cm or there about.... Now my baby is 8weeks and my belly is very big that people ask if I still have baby left inside... My Doctor said I should go for surgery when my baby is 6months before the next pregnancy, but I'm scared that my womb may be tempered with in the process and that will prevent me from conceiving after the surgery. Please should I go for the surgery?

  18. Deciding when to have uterine fibroid surgery prior to conception is a difficult decision. Large uterine fibroids can produce risk for the pregnancy, and surgery can produce risks as well. What you need is a gynecologic consultant to try to put your risks and benefits in perspective for you so that you can make an informed decision. 19. Do you recommend any natural supplements or remedies that can help shrink uterine fibroids? Or accupunture? I've seen on some pages castor oil pads? I had have a 10 cm and 7 cm and a smaller one and I am 5 months post pregnancy and they or at least the largest one are still big. I still look pregnant. I was pregnant with twins and I lost one for what I think was fibroid related. The pathology report post delivery indicated my twin miscarried at 17.5 weeks due to lack of blood flow. Luckily my other twin stayed put. With all that said I want to have one more but I am worried about the possible risks of surgery but also the risks of more fibroids and/or fertility issues. I already had to takefertility meds to get pregnant to begin with.

  20. Uterine fibroids have proved remarkably resistant to herbal therapies or dietary management in fact there is some data that would indicate uterine fibroids may grow larger if there is too much consumption of plant or soy phytoestrogens. For those wanting pregnancy, and not wanting myomectomy they should perhaps think about medical management, consider one of the uterine fibroid research trials (clinicaltrial.gov or call us at 217-356-3736) or perhaps consider a UAE.

When I first contacted it (did go to doctor and got confirmed) I had a couple outbreaks that year (very painful) and then no outbreaks ever again. Like I said it has been almost 8 years. The only thing I can think I did was I used essential oil applications on my sacrum. I did take anti viral meds the doctor gave me for a couple weeks after the first outbreak to take care of the acute symptoms (I didn’t take them for the 2nd outbreak later that year and now this happened in my life I can’t believe this. A great testimony that i must share to all HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS patient in the world i never believed that there could be any complete cure for Herpes or any cure for herpes,i saw people’s testimony on blog sites of how Dr. SANDY herbal cure and sent to them and they were cured. i had to try it too and you can,t believe that in just few weeks i started using it all my pains stop gradually and i had to leave without the herpes the doctor gave to me.
