Happy 60th Birthday: American Acadamy Got A Second New Name

In May of 2011 the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologist will convene in Washington DC. The organization had formed as the American Academy of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and then it renamed itself years later as the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologists, now taking on the name Congress for the organization, retaining the name College for some opinions. It's journal, known as the Green journal to the members, Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of the most cited journals in medicine. Dr. Sam. Berkow became an early editorial writer which was always one of the most popular columns. Although his birth name was Samuel Gordon Berkow, the Sam. with the period became his official signature by personal choice. Dr. Berkow and other early obstetricians probably never dreamed of the complexity in the name or all the reasons for the change. It was an organization founded in Chicago in 1951, so it became 60 years old and there are 51,000 member, it now resides in Washington. ACOG's mission remains four pronged: Education, Research, Practice,  and Advocacy for women
