  1. Most obstetricians find that rupturing membranes, when appropriate will shorten labor. It has been somewhat of a discussion point by obstetricians as to whether to wait until labor is very active, or to do this very soon in labor. This article attempts to address this question among other questions regarding labor. An article like this one seems to confirm that finding. We do have to be a bit careful in applying articles like this to our general population of patients however. In this article their c-section rates are around 40%. In the US C-section rates are around 30% and many obstetricians have significantly lower c-section rates than that.
