Breast Cancer Awareness Month Approaching

As breast cancer awareness month approaches think of some of the pioneering physicians who have advanced the field of detection. The development of mammography was  proceeded over half a century with the first report in 1896 by Dsr. George Beason and lbert Solomon who radiographed a mastectomy specimen to show lymphatic tumor spread, Stafford Leak Waren in the 1920s then pioneered the technique on a woman, and and Robert L. Egan did the sentinel study of 2000 patients which culminated in 1960s.  The link between breast cancer and estrogen was known even earlier than that. George Beson discovered the link between estrogen and the promotion of breast cancer when in 1878 he began rabbit experimentation to attempt to prove his theories, hoping that ovarian removal would lessen cases of breast cancer.  Today we understand a lot about detection, but prevention is still an elusive dream. So don't skip your mammograms when they are indicated, they are our best defense and most breast cancers are curable if found at the time of mammography.
